The Division beta offered a limited experience, with multiple sections of the game barred from entry. Despite the disappointingly small chunk of gameplay that the beta offered, the game still managed to surprise us. The Division borrows gameplay from other titles, yet manages to be surprisingly unique.
Last week, while trying to ward off a group of pesky Dark Zone trolls, I was asked to give a brief summary of what I thought of The Division beta. Pretty obvious really — I found myself engrossed by the game. The world of The Division is one such world, and while the beta stopped access to most of the city, the spaces beyond the ominous red barriers looked exciting and dangerous. That may have been because I had already seen everything there was to see in the limited story mode of the beta.
Or how do they become skilled agents that the world has to rely on? In an open-world. With your neighbours dead, pitiful or filled with the equivalent of post-viral rage. While walking through the post-viral New York, you will notice how well Ubisoft have done to make you feel engrossed in the world that feels as beautiful as it is hostile.
From the tall buildings that dominate the skyline to the tightly squeezed alleys that litter the back streets, you will feel the tensions that New York has to offer around every corner. There seems to be a disconnect, however, between the trying to maintain the two realities at play: The realistic environment versus the RPG styled combat system.
The real world feel of The Divisions environment seems to have a have found itself colliding with the games attempt to bend the perception between realism and RPG.
The RPG styled combat system means that the gameplay had to be removed from reality. The real world weapons, in-game, don’t even come close to acting the way you would expect them to.
A shot to the head via a bullet or two from an assault rifle won’t kill the opposition. Instead, you will need to pelt up to a full clip of thirty bullets to kill some enemies. I found the break between the two worlds somewhat disconcerting as the inherit problem of placing the game between realism and RPG became more apparent with the increased time invested. Ubisoft clearly went in this direction to cater for the RPG styled gameplay, but unlike Destiny or Borderlands, The Division places you in the real world.
Without a drastically altered fictional environment to base itself on, it becomes more difficult to make the two worlds tie into one another. That said, I could easily understand how this may not be a concern for some that are comfortable to sacrifice the immersion of the game for the RPG combat system. And the limited selection of equipment, available skills, limited level cap and access to virtually a fraction of the Base of Operation features meant it was all an appetizer, with the main course arriving in around a month.
The great thing is that there is clearly more. The aforementioned red barriers were plentiful, and beyond those, there is probably more of the higher level same with the addition of some hidden gems like whisper it Destiny-style raids, the game will have plenty of still slightly repetitive activities to keep you going for a very long time indeed.
Actually, just some great loot drops will do the same, and the desire to get to the next level. On Xbox One, the beta looked pretty impressive. The HUD could maybe do with some fading away when not in use, but there are options to adjust the console graphic settings, including switching off some of the HUD displays and overlays. If the beta is still early enough code, the full release should look very sharp indeed. The situation in New York is one that could very conceivably happen in our lifetime.
A virus that spreads at a shocking rate, leaving governments, infrastructure and humanity crippled is a very real — and frightening — possibility.
Add to that, the fact that humanity is not very human even at the best of times, and that collapse only brings out the worst in survivors. In the story mode, the threat is from the AI gangs that roam the street, taking anything from anyone and taking hostages and lives without any worry of retribution. That is until the agents of The Division are activated of course. In the Dark Zone, the threat is from both AI opponents and other agents. The frightening thing about that is you are almost guaranteed to be more at risk from other player controlled agents than the AI because people change in a time of crisis.
Becoming rouge, is surprisingly and sometimes disappointingly easy to do. Firing a bullet into another human in the Dark Zone will result in you going rouge. This means that even if you are shooting at one of the AI opponents and a random player runs into your bullet stream, you will become marked on the map as one of the agents gone bad, which essentially paints a target on your back. In an act of what I like to call bravery, I ventured into the Dark Zone alone on my first outing.
I was wrong. Not all the time, but a fair amount of the time. Whether you have some Dark Zone loot or not, you are fair game — if a team of four against one can be considered fair. This is potentially a part of the game that may drive people away. Assigning rogue points to the players that go out of their way to kill others is more a badge of honour to them than the intended dunce cap, but it is pretty rewarding when you manage to turn the tables on the dastardly cowards ambushing you.
The question of whether the game will be worth investing in was actually relatively easily answered when the beta servers shut down and I sat in what best could be described as sulking. I really wanted to head back out on the streets of New York – even if it was just to look at the Christmas lights flickering over abandoned cars, body bags and bags of rubbish one more time.
